How To Amplify Your Success

As a coach I am observing how much time goes into online networking. It is key to take time out to nurture yourself and your friendships with face to face interactions.

Recently, Funky to Fabulous friends spent time at Artwalk in Downtown Los Angeles. It was so energizing that we will be doing this every month. Here are some tips for serial socializing from fellow HP blogger Kari Henley.

"Not sure how to get started with some serial socializing?

Try to find a way to socially engage in three categories: daily, weekly and monthly. Each takes a slightly different focus and each offer its own rewards.

Daily: set a goal to make a heartfelt connection to at least one person each day that you do not normally run into. 'Reach Out and Touch Someone' - via email, phone call or in person. Think of this as a chance to check in, ask how they are, and offer help if it is needed. When you extend a hand, the return is always there. Maybe someone you know just had a baby, or lost a relative, or is feeling blue.

Weekly: find a small group of people you enjoy and make a weekly commitment to get together. For the social types, try coffee once a week. For athletic types, take a walk, jog or yoga class together. For the spiritual types, try a weekly meditation group to keep everyone relaxed, centered and connected. Make it short- one to two hours, so it is easy to keep the commitment.

Monthly: join or develop a group that may be a bit larger, that shares a common interest. Maybe it is a book club with a twist, a motorcycle riding group, a social action group, a 'going green' group, poetry slam, or a poker night. Monthly gatherings are often the easiest to schedule, and to maintain long term. Think of each of these social commitments as individual roots you are planting in the ground, and as something sacred to cherish.

Our lives are marked by the connections we have, not the accomplishments of our careers. "Battling loneliness requires sacrificing time that could be spent elsewhere, but the payoffs are worth it."

How To Not Burnout!

Here are a few more tips from my wonderful friend and Huffington Post collegue Jason Mannino on how to NOT BURNOUT!

Create a "not to do" :
list I was recently sharing with my business coach that I sometimes find myself getting caught in the "urgent, not important," task category. These are the items on your calendar or lists that seem urgent, but are not ultimately the most critical. They often distract you from the more important tasks that don't always seem as urgent. One example might be checking e-mail when you should really be making a sales call. My coach offered a simple, yet profound suggestion. He suggested I create a "not to do list." Obviously, this list is made up of items on my "to do" list that are not essential and can perhaps be tagged for a later date. Just thinking about creating my "not to do list" increased my energy.

Dissolve your energy vacuums:
A toleration is anything that you are putting up with on a regular basis either physical, mental, or emotional that vacuums your energy. Perhaps there is a project in your queue that you haven't started because you are feeling overwhelmed (see my article on managing overwhelm), perhaps there is a co-worker who is constantly coming to you to gossip and wastes your time in negative energy. What can you do to dissolve these energy drains? Eliminating gossip may be as simple as communicating to this co-worker that you would prefer not to gossip. In regards to overwhelming projects , begin to take the steps to break them down. Delegate what can be delegated and identify tasks that need to be accomplished and a timeline in which to accomplish them. You may be surprised to see your energy raise simply by addressing the issues."

Avoiding "Burnout" ... Take A Break!

As a speaker and coach I am seeing organizations filled with people on the brink of burnout.
Here are some tips from my wonderful friend and Huffington Post collegue Jason Mannino. I look forward to sharing more of his hands on techniques with you in the future.

"Take Regular Breaks"

In The Power of Full Engagement John Loehr and Tony Schwartz came up with an energy management system based on years of experience studying Olympic level athletes. They made a couple of fascinating discoveries. Among those include the obvious, though sometimes overlooked fact that recovery from an output of energy (physical or mental) is critical. In the work environment this translates to taking breaks at regular intervals. Specifically, it is best to take a fifteen minute break every 90 minutes. If you work in front of a computer, checking e-mail does not constitute a break. Allow yourself to take breaks that include getting up from your desk, taking a walk, leaving the building, and drinking water.

Also breaking up your work by alternating mentally demanding tasks with simple busy work can help maintain the energy necessary to keep your mental focus throughout the day.
I am very proud to say I have mastered the art of avoiding burnout within myself and my career. It can be a struggle but following these small tips can make a huge difference.

Tips to Avoid Burnout. How to Take A Stay-cation.

As an executive coach, I see so many of my clients at large companies are burnt to a crisp. Don't believe me? Why is it that it is August and so many Huffington Post bloggers are talking about burnout? My belief it that these are brilliant posts, from brilliant people and like the rest of us...they need a break. Even if a big trip isn't in your budget you can take a 'stay-cation.' Here are some Stay-cation Tips.

1. Take A Vacation....From Your Phone.
One of the fastest ways to unwind is to "take a vacation" from your PDA. As a culture we are accustomed to being 'wired' all day every day. When I offered the tip of putting your phone away on a TV show recently the anchor exclaimed that it was 'brilliant'. My bet is that she could benefit from a PDA vacation.

2. The 12 Steps Insurance Policy

Many Americans only take a 'semi vacation'. They lug their laptop to the beach and I have seen them talking on their cell phones while taking a hike. They allow themselves to work "1 or 2 hours" a day even on vacation. If you aren't fully disconnected from your work, you aren't allowing yourself to truly replenish. A semi vacation isn't the real vacation your body needs.

How do you avoid that?
The 12 Step Rule. Take 12 steps away from your computer, blackberry, iphone. If you can't take the 12 steps away from your computer for four days...you may be addicted to the over stimulation it represents.

3. It's Nap Time.

"After the going's been tough the tough get horizontal." If you are like most American's you have a sleep debt. Take some vacation time to catch up on your zzzzzz's. Studies show that lack of sleep is a huge stressor for your body.

4. Is Your Name Martha?

Unless your name is Martha Stewart and you just love, love, love to organize drawers do not turn your stay-cation into a chore and errand festival. (I had a client whose hobby was ironing -so I know that those folks are out there!) If you know that you are more relaxed with a tidy home take the weekend before your stay-cation to clean.

5. People First
Is spending time with friend pretty much the last thing on your To Do list? Now is the time to see how much richer and fuller your life is with the folks you enjoy. Potlucks, bike rides, hikes there may even be free concerts or gallery events in your town.

What are some of your tips for a stay-cation?

Social Media To Increase Business

What are you doing to leverage your next meeting?

Are you using your social media to increase your business?

As a coach I am observing people are leveraging social media to help
them obtain referrals and increase their business. I've talked to many people
utilizing social media to increase their business. Here is a great tip from
Anne Bachrach, a wonderful coach in the financial services industry.
If you like the idea, you may want to include this into your
business to see how it can help you do more business and make more m*o*n*e*y.

Outer Marketing Tip:
A sales executive who is on LinkedIn, found out that a client of his with
whom she was having an upcoming meeting with was also on LinkedIn.
She noticed that this client had a LinkedIn community of approximately
30 or so people. The client came in to meet with the her for their regular
meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting, she was prepared to ask for
referrals. She showed the client the LinkedIn community list she took off
the computer and asked her if any of those people would be appropriate to
refer to her.

To net it out, she got about 9 referrals from this idea.

There are many other social media websites (ex. Plaxo,
Facebook, Youtube,Ecademy, Twitter, etc) that you can utilize to take advantage of this simple strategy to obtain even more referrals and get more clients.

Inner Marketing Fab Tip:
Commit to a group that you will reach a specific number of decision makers.
Instead of setting your goal to make 20 calls, set a clear intention to speak
to 6 decision makers.

Are you creating the results you want?

How To Achieve A Goal

As a speaker and executive coach I find that this is a simple recipe for success. "To receive, you must be active, Keep in mind your purpose. You will receive in direction proportion to: Your clarity of vision Your definiteness of purpose The steadiness of your faith The depth of your gratitude"

To receive, you must be active.
What are you doing today to make your goal a reality?

Keep in mind your purpose.
How does this goal serve a greater good?

You will receive in direction proportion to:
Your clarity of vision
Do you see, touch and feel this goal?

Your clarity of vision-Is it 50% believable? Can you see yourself 100% having already achieving it?
Your definiteness of purpose- How will this benefit the world as well as yourself?
The steadiness of your faith- Are you willing to keep going and overcome setbacks?
The depth of your gratitude- Are you grateful for everything you already have?

Drain Your Brain To Save Time!

More time management tips revealed!!

Drain Your Brain
Go Through Your Spaces At Work and Home.
Look through your desk drawers, desktop, in-basket, closets, cupboards, shelves and file drawers and make a master to-do list of anything that needs to be done based on what you see. For example: As you look in your file drawer do you: Need to clean out last years financial file and store the receipts, make file folder labels for the most recently added documents, follow up with a potential client, whose business card you found stuck in one of the folders.

Go Through Your Electronic Spaces
Look through your email in-box, PDA and voicemail messages and add any action items to the existing master to-do list that you are not going to handle immediately and are not recorded elsewhere. For example: An email from a colleague requesting you make a few changes to a report you wrote, a voice message from your brother about possible dates for a family reunion, an email from the professional association of crawfish-catchers announcing their annual crab feed fund raiser.

Go Through Your Brain
Look through your own mind and using the list above write down any relevant to-do items. Once you have done this final emptying out, you can keep this system squeaky clean by adding to your master to-do list anything that pops into your head.

Share your strategies with me! How do you make it through the week?

Still looking for help with your time management skills?

Are you still looking for help with your time management skills? I think we all are! Even as an executive life coach I find myself constantly revamping my time management skills. Here are a few more great tips from fellow Huffington Post blogger Karen Leland, author of Time Management In An Instant: 60 Ways to Make the Most of Your Day.

Think of your brain as a computer hard drive - it can only hold so much memory. When a hard drive reaches it's capacity, it starts to slow down and wonky things happen. (What are your weary wonks? I know we will all get a laugh out of sharing them.) By capturing your open items on a list your brain is freed up to focus on what's in front of you right now. The ideas and to-do items that comprise these lists come from a variety of different sources including:

• Conversations with family, friends and business associates
• Something you read (book, magazine, business brief, research paper etc.)
• Items you receive in the mail (a brochure, invitation, pamphlet etc.)
• Emails
• Classes you take
• Conferences you attend
• Voicemail
• Professional groups you belong to
• Meetings you attend
• Your in-basket
• Your desktop
• Your file drawers
• Your closets, cupboards and cabinets

Just taking the time to capture all the open items in your life and write them down can dramatically improve your ability to focus and get things done.

Proof That Nothing Is Impossible

This is a photo taken in Santa Barbara after the fires raged through the hills.

It is a sign of the times...

The Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, CA last week caused
these two to take shelter together. The fawn is 3 days old
and the bobcat about 3 weeks. The fawn came from somewhere
in the fire and the bobcat from Carpentaria. They
immediately bonded and snuggled together under a desk in the
Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office for several hours.

Time Management Skills

Do you find yourself sinking under the blaze of busy? Are papers marching across your desk in such a mad frenzy that your mind is goes blank the moment you sit down? Ahhh. What to do? Even as a life coach here in Santa Monica I face this challenge on a daily basis, and asked fellow Huffington Post blogger Karen Leland, author of Time Management In An Instant: 60 Ways to Make the Most of Your Day to share tools to untangle your day.

Here's a Tip!

Write It Don't Fight It
All those undone items tug at you to get done today, or be as far off in the future as retirement. The trick is to gather them together by writing them down so that you don't have to waste valuable mental real estate trying to keep track of them.

You will feel better, sleep better and get more done! Try it and let me know what you think.

Losing Followers On Twitter?

Are you losing followers on Twitter and you don't know why? As an executive life coach I found that twitter can be a very useful networking tool, but when abused or used for spam it can be very annoying. Here are a few things you may be doing that may cost you your followers!

Automatic Direct Messages: These things are very annoying, and there is nothing personal about them. For example, “Thanks for following me! Be sure to check out my website!” is considered a spam.

Blasting Tweets: Are you one of those people who send out ten or more posts at once that cover up the entire wall? You need to give others a chance to speak up. When you spam like that, all people see is a wall of your smiley face picture. If you ever wonder why you lose a bunch of followers on Twitter all at once, this could be the biggest reason.

Over Promoting: Do you only post about your website? People will think you are a robot if all you do is talk about your website and tell people to check it out. Try to connect with others by interacting on Twitter. If somebody posts something interesting, then you can talk about it, and share it with your followers.

Proper Follow Up: When people ask you questions through a @reply or direct messages, make sure you respond to them. You may have post something interesting that caught their attention. Connect with these people and they may recommend you to their followers later.

Keep It Clean: Many people use twitter at work. Profanity is not something they can afford to have flashing on their computer. Most people will immediately unfollow these types of users.(This information was provided by: horno)

I hope these tips keep you tweeter the right way and help you stay in touch with your followers!

Do you have a gripe about tweeting? Share it here and help others!!
